Learn Strings at The PPS

Our Approach to Teaching

String instruction at The Piano Prep School focuses on the “whole musician,” including proper technique, a natural approach to playing, reading proficiency, musicianship, and an emphasis on sound!

Private Lessons follow a structured curriculum, but offer a customized approach to best meet each student’s needs. Students are encouraged and supported in exploring performance/ensemble opportunities like school orchestra, Dayton Philharmonic Junior and Youth Orchestras, and our Chamber Music Program.

Available for Grades 6 – 12 and Adult Students, Chamber Music offers the unique experience of musical collaboration for stringed instruments, piano and guitar. Students are grouped in duos, trios or quartets based on playing level and experience. Each ensemble receives coaching from professional musicians and opportunities to perform. We welcome both currently enrolled students, as well as those studying privately elsewhere. Chamber Music is not only fun, but a meaningful way to deepen your musical knowledge and talent!

Our skilled, professional string instructors are not only dedicated teachers, but are active, professional musicians. Their expertise and passion for music is evident in every lesson, and they are ready to learn more about your musical goals!

Choosing a String Instrument

Choosing a string instrument can be both exciting and daunting, as each offers unique characteristics that cater to different musical preferences. Whether you’re drawn to the elegance of the violin, the warm tones of the viola, or the deep resonance of the cello, here’s a guide to help you decide which instrument might be the perfect fit for you. No matter your choice, the string instructors at The PPS have decades of experience and are eager to help you grow!

Please Note ~ The size of the student should not be a determining factor when choosing a string instrument. All string instruments are available in multiple sizes to best fit students of all ages.

Violin

The violin is the smallest of the string family instruments, and therefor makes the highest sounds. It is incredibly versatile, fitting well in various musical genres from classical to folk, jazz, and even modern pop. In ensembles, the violins frequently, but not always, receive the melody.

Viola

The viola is slightly larger than the violin, though still played between the chin and left shoulder. It offers deeper, lower notes and a warmer tone than the violin. Violas often provide harmonies and counter melodies, contributing to the depth of orchestral sound.

Cello

The cello offers a warm and resonant sound that can be both powerful and lyrical. It is larger than the violin and viola, and is played sitting down with the body of the cello between the knees. It shines in both solo and ensemble settings, often playing melodies, harmonies, or bass lines as needed.
